“Sorrento Cheese Summer in Little Italy” Celebration The Little Italy Merchants
Association (LIMA), which represents restaurant, café
and shop owners in Little Italy, has created a Little Italy
Wall of Fame which was unveiled on Sunday, May
28, at 12 Noon with the induction of its first honoree,
Frank Sinatra, Jr. The Little Italy Wall of Fame,
sponsored by LIMA and Sorrento Cheese,
a major supporter of Little Italy, will be temporarily located in
the patio of Most Precious Blood Church at 109 Mulberry Street until
a permanent home is selected.
“We have been discussing the creation of a Little Italy
Wall of Fame for some time,” said Robert J. Ianniello,
Jr., President of LIMA. “Since Frank
Sinatra, Jr. was already scheduled to perform a free concert
on Mulberry Street on Monday, May 29 (Memorial Day) at 3
PM on the Opening Weekend of our annual Sorrento
Cheese Summer in Little Italy celebration, we decided
that this was an appropriate time to inaugurate the project which
will honor notable Italian Americans who make valuable contributions
to Italian culture and heritage.”
“We wholeheartedly support this project and the selection
of Frank Sinatra, Jr. as the first inductee,” said Fred
Hermann, Corporate Director of Marketing for Sorrento
Cheese. “Our company is happy to support activities
that preserve and enhance Italian-American culture and heritage
in communities all over the United States and we believe the Little
Italy Wall of Fame is an invaluable addition to New York City.
Upon learning that he had been selected by LIMA to be the first
person to be inducted in the Little Italy Wall of Fame, Frank Sinatra,
Jr. said, “I am proud and humbled by this honor. Personally
I love Little Italy and I make a point of trying to visit the community
whenever I come to New York. On behalf of the entire Sinatra family,
I thank LIMA and Sorrento Cheese for selecting me.”
Immediately following the induction ceremony, Frank attended a lunch
in his honor hosted by La Mela Restaurant on Mulberry Street.
