1ST ANNUAL WISE GUYS MEATBALL EATING COMPETITION;
CIGAR ROLLING DEMO AND CIGARS GIVEAWAY

Sorrento Cheese Summer in Little Italy, the summer-long outdoor celebration presented by the Little Italy Merchants Association (LIMA) and Sorrento Cheese, will present a series of special events for the entire family over the gala three-day Labor Day Weekend. The 1st Annual “Wise Guys” Meatball Eating Competition will kick-off the weekend on Saturday, September 2, at 2 PM, followed on Sunday, September 3, at 2 PM by a cigar rolling and wrapping demonstration, and concluding on Labor Day, Monday, September 4, with two performances at 1 PM and 3 PM by the world-renowned Zoppe Italian Family Theater, starring Nino, the clown, and a group of electrifying acrobats, jugglers and rope walkers performing acts of derring-do.

A total of 10 “big eaters,” representing local restaurants and cafes, will roll up their sleeves and loosen their belts to compete in Little Italy’s 1st Annual “Wise Guys” Meatball Eating Competition on Saturday afternoon, September 2, on a stage in the outdoor parking lot on Mulberry Street between Canal and Hester Streets. Sponsored by Bolla Wines and Peroni Beer, the competition will use “Wiseguy Meatballs,” a new food product line featured weekly on “It’s the WISEGUY SHOW” on Sirius Satellite Radio (Wednesdays, 6 to 7 PM on Channel 147). Competitors will be judged on how many one-ounce meatballs they can consume in an eight-minute period. Judges will include cast members of the popular Sirius Satellite Radio program that features personalities including Vinny “Big Pussy” Pastore; “Little” Steven Van Zandt; John “ChaCha” Ciarcia, unofficial Mayor of Little Italy; “Brooklyn” Joe Causi; Joe “Joey Rags” Rigano; and “Uncle Floyd” Vivino. A Championship trophy will be awarded to the winner and the top two eaters will also win cash prizes.

On Sunday, September 3, at 2 PM, cigar aficionados can learn how to roll and wrap their own cigars at a special demonstration that will take place in front of the Mulberry Street Cigar Co., 140 Mulberry Street, between Hester and Grand Streets. Sponsored by De Nobili Cigars, visitors will be given sample packages of Parodi King Size and Avanti Anisette cigars.

New Yorkers are in for a special treat when the Zoppe Italian National Theater (www.zoppe.net), a European performance group dating back to 1842, makes its second visit to Little Italy on Monday, July 4, with two Free performances at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Sponsored by Sorrento Cheese, the troupe stars the world renowned Nino, the Clown, and a group of exciting acrobats, jugglers and rope walkers who perform breathtaking deeds of derring-do. The performances will take place in the Outdoor Parking Lot on Mulberry Street between Canal and Hester Streets. There will be unreserved bleacher seating with children under ten years of age given preferential “up-front” seats.

The Zoppe Italian National Theater performs all over the world and has often been compared to a Fellini film. This simple but very magical performance captivates old and young alike with its showmanship, artistry and touching, yet funny, clown antics. The performance is accented with the beautiful and classic sounds of predominantly Italian folk music.

Throughout the performance, it is Giovanni Zoppe who is the thread that holds the show together. He makes you laugh, cry and fall in love with innocent character of Nino, the Clown, in the same way that Charlie Chaplin did in the many films he created. His pratfalls and side-splitting comedy routines bring the house down!

One of the memorable things about this performance is its intimacy with the audience, and this year’s updated version has received favorable reviews from all over the country!
